Halden Paint Co. has mixed paint in the same Porto workshop since 1924. They sell 214 colours, and until this spring their website, their printed colour cards and the labels on their tins each described those colours differently.

We started by measuring every colour from a painted sample rather than from old files. Then we grouped them into eleven families that customers actually think in, such as “chalk whites” and “river greens”, instead of the internal codes the shop used.

Designing for paper first

Colour cards are what people take home, so we designed them first and made the screen follow. Each family has its own card, its own page and its own label style, and all three now show the same name, number and swatch.

Our colour cards, website and tins finally speak the same language.
