We buy plugs and grow them on in our own glasshouse, which is why a plant from here does not sulk for a month when it reaches you: it has already been in a pot, in British light, through a winter.

Plant care

Repotting, in four steps

01

Wait for roots

Repot when roots show through the drainage holes, not on a calendar. Most plants want it every second spring.

Go up one size

12 cm to 17 cm, not 12 cm to 22 cm. A pot too large holds water the roots cannot reach and rots them.

Keep the depth

Same soil line as before. Burying the stem is the commonest way to lose a plant to a repot.

Water, then wait

Water it in, then leave it a fortnight before feeding. New compost has everything it needs.
