Dozens of hot air balloons rising over an eroded valley at sunrise

Ninety Balloons Before Sunrise

They all launch inside about fifteen minutes. Miss it and you are left with a valley full of hot air balloons and flat, even light, which is a completely different and much worse photograph.

Shooting from a ridge rather than the valley floor keeps the balloons separated against the sky. From below they overlap into a single mass of colour.

70mm. Wider and the balloons become confetti; longer and you lose the landscape that explains where you are.
