Waiting for the Fog to Lift

Two hours in the cold for about four minutes of light. The fog decides when it lifts, and the only useful thing you can do beforehand is be standing in the right place with the tripod already level.

Available light, 85mm, one stop under. Metering for the bright band above the trees keeps the pines dark, which is what makes the fog look like fog rather than a blown highlight.

I stayed another hour after this and got nothing. That is the usual ratio, and it is worth saying out loud, because the pictures that get published never mention the hour afterwards.
