On the inhabited islands of the Maldives, the reef often starts a few metres from the beach. With a mask, fins and a buddy, you can see parrotfish and reef sharks before breakfast, no boat needed.

Our guides show you the channels on the first morning, because the current runs through them and the sea looks calm from the shore when it is not. We swim at slack water, never alone, and never touch the coral.
Most local islands ask swimmers to cover up away from the designated bikini beach. It is easy, it is respectful, and a rash vest keeps the sun off your back anyway.
