This is the question that comes up in every security review, usually in week three, usually after someone has already started using us. It is a fair question and the answer is short, so it should not take a review to get it.
The region is your choice, once
When a workspace is created you pick where it lives: the EU, the United States or Australia. Files, database, backups and search indexes all sit in that region, and the data does not leave it.
The one thing that cannot move afterwards is the region itself. Changing it means creating a new workspace and importing into it, which we will do with you if you ask, but it is a migration rather than a setting. We would rather say that plainly than bury it in a footnote after you have two years of work in the wrong place.
Export is not a retention feature
Everything you put into Unapp can be taken out again: projects, boards, comments, files and history, as CSV or through the API. That is true on every plan, including the free one, and it does not require a support ticket or a phone call.
We made a deliberate decision not to use export as a lever. Some tools make leaving quietly difficult, and it works, in the sense that people stay for one more quarter and then tell everyone they know what it was like. It is a strange business to be in.
If you cancel
Cancel and the workspace drops to the free plan rather than disappearing. Your data stays, the paid features stop, and nothing is deleted while you decide what to do next.
If you delete the workspace outright, we keep one encrypted backup for thirty days, in the same region, in case the deletion was a mistake made on a Friday afternoon. After thirty days it is gone from the backups too, and we cannot get it back for you, however nicely you ask.
Who can see it here
Access to customer data is limited to the people who need it for support, it is logged, and the log is available to you on the Business plan along with single sign-on. When a support engineer needs to look at your workspace to answer a question, they ask first, unless you have already told us not to bother asking.
What we still do not do
We do not sell or share your content, we do not train anything on it, and we do not keep an analytics copy in a second region “for performance”. If that changes, it will be an announcement on this blog before it is a change in a terms document.
The short version
Pick a region. Export whenever you like. Leave whenever you like, without a retention call. None of that is generous — it is the minimum a tool should offer when you are trusting it with the plan for your year — but it is worth writing down, because a surprising number of tools cannot say the same in six paragraphs.
