Groom
Khoa Tran
Khoa designs footbridges for a living and has an opinion about every one he crosses. He makes the best phở in our building, plays the bass badly and loudly, and cried at the proposal, though he will tell you it was the wind.
First meet
A rainy afternoon in August 2019, a crowded café in District 3 and one free chair. Khoa asked if it was taken, and stayed until the rain stopped. It took three hours.
He proposed
At sunrise on the Thu Thiem bridge in March 2026, with a bunch of baby’s breath and a speech he had practised for a week and then forgot completely.
Love story
Seven years, two flats and one very patient cat. The photographs on this site are from the morning we went back to the bridge.
Wedding day
Saturday 11 December 2027, in the garden by the river.
Bride
Mai Nguyen
Mai teaches literature at a school in District 1, grows far too many orchids on a small balcony and has read every book on that café’s shelf twice. She chose the flowers, the music and the date. Khoa chose the cake.

Dancing until late
A band until eleven, then Mai’s cousin takes over the music. Taxis wait at the gate from half past midnight.
