What I carry on a five-day trip

Bike with frame, seat and handlebar bags on a beach at sunset

Every year my kit gets a little lighter, not because I buy lighter things but because I stop carrying things I never use. This is what was on the bike for five days on the coast in September.

Bag by bag

  • Handlebar roll: tent, sleeping bag and a down jacket.
  • Frame bag: stove, pot, fuel, food for the day and the repair kit.
  • Seat pack: spare clothes, a wool base layer and a rain shell.
  • Top tube bag: phone, snacks, sunscreen and the tide table.

The two things I would never leave behind are a proper pair of camp socks and a small foam pad to sit on. Neither is on any gear list I have ever read, and both make the evenings better.
