The temporary crown is the part everyone remembers, usually because it came off in a sandwich.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Since we started milling crowns at the practice, most of ours are fitted in a single appointment. Dr Samuel Oyelaran, who leads our restorative work, is asked about it often enough that it deserves a proper explanation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What happens on the day<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The appointment takes around two hours, and you spend a good part of it sitting comfortably rather than having anything done.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>The tooth is numbed and prepared, exactly as it would be for any crown.<\/li>\n\n\n<li>Instead of a mould, we take a 3D scan of the tooth with a small camera. There is no putty and nothing to gag on.<\/li>\n\n\n<li>The crown is designed on screen and shaped to fit your bite and the teeth either side.<\/li>\n\n\n<li>It is milled from a solid block of ceramic in the practice, which takes about twenty minutes.<\/li>\n\n\n<li>We check the fit, adjust it and bond it in place.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">You leave with the finished crown. There is no temporary, no second injection and no second morning off work.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Is it as good as a laboratory crown?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For most teeth, yes. The ceramic we use is strong enough for back teeth and is matched to the shade of your own teeth before milling, and the fit is checked under magnification before anything is bonded.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">There are cases where we still send work to a laboratory. Front teeth with unusual colouring, longer bridges and some implant work benefit from a technician&#8217;s hand, and Dr Oyelaran will tell you so at the planning appointment. It is not a question of cost but of which will look better and last longer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What it costs<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">As with every treatment here, you will have the price in writing before anything starts. Crowns are available on the NHS where they are clinically necessary, and we will explain which options apply to your tooth.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Looking after it<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A crown is only as healthy as the tooth underneath it. The edge where the crown meets the tooth still needs brushing and cleaning between, and your hygiene appointments matter more, not less. A well-looked-after crown lasts many years, and the ones that fail early are nearly always let down at the gum line rather than by the crown itself.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Most crowns mean a mould, a temporary crown and a second visit a fortnight later.
