Seven until half past eight, in the hall, with the door on Mill Lane open from half past six because somebody always arrives early and stands in the car park deciding whether to come in.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">There is no booking and no charge. You do not need to be part of the church, and nobody will ask you whether you are.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What happens on a Thursday<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It is less formal than the name suggests. There is tea, a stack of biscuits, four tables and a printer that works about eighty per cent of the time.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>CVs. Most people arrive with one that has been added to for ten years. We help cut it down, put the last five years first, and get it onto one side of paper that a person will actually read.<\/li>\n\n\n<li>Applications. Filling in an online form for the fourth time in a week is grim, and doing it next to someone else who is also doing it is measurably less grim.<\/li>\n\n\n<li>Interview practice. This is the part people dread and the part that helps most. Two of our volunteers hire for a living and will ask you the questions you are afraid of, then tell you what they would have thought.<\/li>\n\n\n<li>References, wording, and the awkward parts: explaining a gap, explaining a dismissal, explaining a career that changed direction at fifty.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Who comes<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Last term it was about a dozen people a week. Some were between jobs, some were in work and wanted out, two were coming back after years at home with children, and one had been made redundant three weeks before his sixtieth birthday and had not applied for anything since 1994.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Roughly half found something within the term. That is not a claim about us; the ones who found work did the work. What the evening gives is a deadline, a printer, and a room where looking for a job is a normal thing to be doing on a Thursday.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What you need to bring<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Nothing. If you have a CV, bring it on a memory stick or email it to yourself and we will print it. If you do not have one, come anyway; starting from a blank page with someone else in the room is easier than starting from a blank page alone.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">If you would rather help than come<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">We need two more volunteers, particularly anyone who has sat on the other side of an interview table in the last few years. It is one evening a fortnight, not every week, and the training is a conversation with Ruth in the office and a DBS check.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">We could also use a second working printer, if anyone has one going spare.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The rest of the week<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The job club is one of several things the hall does that are not a service. The food bank runs on Mill Lane, the debt advice centre sees people by appointment, and the community lunch is on the first Saturday of the month, where everyone eats and nobody pays.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">None of it requires you to come on a Sunday, and nobody will follow up to see whether you did.
