Weekly visits for neighbors who live alone

Why it matters

One in five households on our pantry list is someone over seventy who lives alone. For many of them the Thursday parcel is the only knock at the door all week.

Our visitors call in once a week for an hour: coffee, a chat, a lightbulb changed, a letter read aloud, a lift to the pharmacy. Each visitor is trained, checked and paired with the same neighbor, so the visit becomes a friendship rather than a service.

$12,000 covers a year of the scheme: training for forty new visitors, background checks, mileage for the longer routes and a small fund for the things a visit turns up — a space heater, a new kettle, a grab rail by the bath.

Two hours a week is enough. Pack parcels, drive the van, cook on Fridays or sit with someone over coffee — we train you and pair you with someone who has done it before.
