It flattens faces, swallows detail and turns every shadow into the same dark maroon. It is also, at two in the morning in a club in S\u00e3o Paulo, the only light there is.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The trick is to stop fighting it. Let the red fill the frame, find one other colour to carry the picture \u2014 here, the green and yellow of a pair of glow sticks \u2014 and let the faces be red. Nobody at a party wants to be lit like a passport photo anyway.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Find the one colour that is not red, and build the picture around it.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What I carried<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>One camera, one fixed 35mm lens.<\/li>\n\n<li>Nothing to change the light, and no flash.<\/li>\n\n<li>A notebook for the names of everyone who agreed to be photographed.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The stop sign behind them says <em>pare<\/em> \u2014 stop \u2014 which nobody in the room did until the lights came on.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Red light flattens faces and swallows detail.
